Because originally people only viewed text based web pages that generally didn’t have many pictures and that hardly took any bandwidth, hence they just had a unlimited download cap. That’s changed dramatically with Youtube, Myspace, P2P ect ect.. Now people are hogging up drastically more of the network then before, which is a disaster for isp’s if they don’t either jack the price up alot or have download caps
Comcast made a proposal recently to charge extra to people who were downloading more than 250GB per month in an apparent attempt to deter torrent users. They said these people compromise 1% of their customers but eating I guess more than (80%?) of bandwidth. Customers would receive a notice and “friendly” proposal to a metered plan or something like that.
I’m not entirely sure if this has passed all the necessary government regulations yet.
Well, I pay about A$40 (~US$27) for 2GB of download a month…and like a 250GB download cap would be more then A$100+ a month? One of my friends in America has said that it was around US$40 for a 512kbps line (unlimited download) – is that true?
Anyway, Australia’s too small to make an impact on world Internet traffic.

I pay $45 for 3mbs (mostly burst though)
Aus internets crazy expensive $150au + for 100gig cap, most plans are 10 – 25gig 1.5mbs and you generally don’t see any plans with a higher cap either :S
enzeru, I suggest you take a look at bc.whirlpool.net.au for better deals if you haven’t already.
I myself pay AU$55/month for an ADSL2 plan with 20GB peak (midday to midnight) 48GB off-peak (midnight to midday) with $3/GB or part thereof excess. The plan itself is no longer offered, though there are competitive alternatives.
Hopefully, in a years time, the connection to Guam will lower prices, but everything is rising to the point that whatever reductions in price an extra international connection would have is negated by the time it’s complete.
