    slight error on the translation for Confucius at 21:49.

    You have “If a man in the morning hears the right way, he may die in the evening hearing regret.”

    It sounded off to me so I looked it up and it should be “If a man in the morning hears the right way, he may die in the evening without regret.”

    http://books.google.com/books?id=FBw1AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA135&lpg=PA135&dq=if+a+man+in+the+morning+hears+the+right+way&source=web&ots=jgxbLT96QI&sig=NJmfnpCp4PrXLQq9jN0PVH_BvrY&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result

    @BettiePage
    First of all, I’m impressed that someone actually paid attention to the Confucius verses. :)

    I actually debate with myself for that line, because it didn’t sound right to me either. However, too many sources say what you saw we put there. Here are just a few of the examples:

    http://acc6.its.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~phalsall/texts/analects.txt
    http://www.geocities.com/onkellotus/Andere/AnalectsWaley.html
    https://www.sacred-texts.com/cfu/conf1.htm
    http://www.wright-house.com/religions/confucius/Analects.html

  22. BettiePage UNITED STATES August 25th, 2008 2:33 pm

    Those are all translations by Arthur Waley, while the source I used is by James Legge.

    I am not sure who is right or wrong unless you can reference the original Chinese text and get a translation from that. Or do translation from the spoken JP.

    However just by reading both translations… the Waley translation just does not make sense.

    Another translation…

    “If I can hear the Way in the morning, in the evening I can die content.”

    http://www.acmuller.net/con-dao/analects.html

    They do list Chinese text on the page…

    『4-8』子曰:「朝聞道, 夕死可矣 」

    I’ve tried babel doesnt seem to help much.

  23. guuchan UNITED STATES August 25th, 2008 3:53 pm

    @BettiePage
    I have to agree James Legge’s version does _sound_ more correct, but I figured maybe Arthur Waley just has a different way of expressing/phrasing it (and still got the correct meaning)? Maybe “hear regret” is not what we think it means? Don’t you think it’s a little strange that a widely adopted translation is wrong and all those people/organizations just use it unknowingly?

    Btw, that’s ancient Chinese literature, you can’t feed it into babelfish ^^;, if not everything else too. Babelfish is just simply bad for your health. :P

  24. BettiePage UNITED STATES August 25th, 2008 5:02 pm

    Yes I know it’s ancient Chinese…

    I’ve asked several folks here who’s native language is Chinese and they dont know it :o

    James Legge’s version was published 1st in 1867 vs Waley’s in 1938. Typo’s do slip in from time to time, and if it’s not caught could be reprinted? Unlikely imo, so I would guess that my interpretation of his translation is off.

    I’ve looked at a few other verses and Waley’s translations isnt that far off from Legge’s. Just that the 4-4 translation difference is night and day imo.

  25. guuchan UNITED STATES August 25th, 2008 9:21 pm

    @BettiePage
    When I said ancient Chinese, I didn’t just mean it’s written in ancient time, but also implying it’s written in the ancient way, which is very different from modern Chinese. Only highly educated folks in Chinese language would understand that.

    I can understand the Chinese verse just fine, it’s the English interpretation that I have doubt in. Regardless it’s a typo, a true mistake, or it is indeed right, I believe I should have at least convinced you why you saw what you saw in the sub, yeah? ;)
